The Principality of Sealand (Micronation)

The Maunsell Sea Forts functioned as British fortified towers in defense against the German air raids in World War II. After the retirement of the forts, in 1956, one of the abandoned sea forts (HM Fort Roughs) was taken over and now serves as a "micronation."

History:
-In 1967, Major Paddy Roy Bates claimed the territory for himself.
-In 1968 the British Royal Navy approached the claimed territory. His son, Michael Bates, fired a warning shot at the Navy which then led to Major Paddy Roy Bates being sent to English court (since he was still subject to Britain). Since English waters go three miles off the coast and Sealand is six miles off of the shore, the case could not proceed, thus Sealand is born. in
-In 1975, Bates introduced the Sealand constitution.
-In 1978, Professor Alexander G. Achenbach (lawyer with a passport to Sealand) attempted to take over Sealand while Major Paddy Roy Bates was away. Him and several German and Dutch citizens held Michael Bates captive and took control of the tower. He was released later in the Netherlands. Upon the return of Major Paddy Roy Bates, a helicopter assault was led on the invaders and then captured them as prisoners of war. Achenbach had to pay a fine approximately equivalent to US $35,000
-In the 1990s the vessel Golden Eye was fired at by Sealand who was enforcing their twelve nautical mile claim of territory. From there on passports to Sealand were revoked.
-Unfortunately in 2006, the Rough Tower caught on fire due to electrical failure but there were no deaths, only a few minor injuries.

Sealand holds the world record for "the smallest area to lay claim to nation status".

MICE ON DRUGS

This website, produced by the University of Utah shows how some common drugs work with a twist. The activity, geared towards students, takes place in a laboratory, or more specifically, a funky machine next to a cage of mice. The activity opens with a party scene. There is music and mice who appear to be partying and appear to be using either marijuana, LSD, methamphetamine, alcohol, ecstasy, or heroine. The intro then cuts to a dark lab with a machine. The lights turn on, the camera zooms out, and you see a cage full of mice, (all showing outward signs of the drug they've taken) a lab worker, and a machine. The user has to direct the hand of the lab worker to pick up a mouse, and place it in an armchair suspended in the cage by a robotic arm attached to the machine next to the cage. After a mouse is in the chair, it is moved to the machine (it is amazing the mouse is not injured during the movement). Then the user is educated about the drug the mouse has taken, after 4-5 slides, the mouse is returned to the cage to be exchanged by another. One good point of the site is that it does not go too overboard on how bad drugs are for someone, (YES, I KNOW THEY ARE) the site just informs you.

Sepak Takraw

Short History

Sepak takraw was almost definitely based on the Chinese game of cuju (a name which also means "kick ball"). The sport would have been brought in through early trade and had already become popular in Malaysia and Thailand by the early 1400s. Back then it was called takraw in Thai or sepak raga (literally "kick rattan ball", because the ball is made of rattan) in Malay and played mainly by men and boys standing in a circle, kicking the ball back and forth between them.




How To Play

-Flip a coin. The teams captains call it, and whoever calls correctly gets to choose to go first or choose the side they wish to be on.
-Start the set. The designated team serves first.
To serve, one player stands in the right semi-circle on their side of the court. He kicks the ball to the server, who stands in the circle on their side of the court. He kicks the ball up and over the net.
-Pass the ball to the other team using only your feet and head. Play continues until a team makes a fault, which is when the ball is not kicked before it hits the ground or the net stops it from going to the other side of the court. If a fault is made, the other team scores and serves. The set is over when a team scores 21 points. If the game is tied at 20 points, the set continues until 25 points are scored.
-Start the next set after the designated amounts of points are scored. The teams change sides of the court, and the team that lost the previous set serves. When a team wins two sets, a new regu is started.
-The second regu is played the same way. The first person to win two regus wins the game.

A soda fountain found in almost every fast food establishment, or in most fast food type eatery. Before using it however, make sure you pay for your glass of pop. Even if it stands out in area where there are no employees, remember, it is not free!

Steps

1. Pay for a soda at the counter. Take the glass or paper cup that they give you, or use the one that stands next to the soda fountain.
   
2. Place the empty cup, hole side up, under the ice dispenser and use cup to apply gentle pressure to the activating lever. Remove the cup when the ice has reached your desired level.
   
3. Decide which drink you want. Use your cup to apply pressure to the activating lever directly below your drink of choice. Note that some fountains employ a push-button style switch which will need to be activated by pressure from a firm object, such as a finger.
   
4. Hold the glass with the ice under one dispenser at a time, if you are going to mix sodas, or under just the one of your choice if you are only going to get one.
   
5. Soda fizzes so be sure you watch and stop before it overfills. Select the size cover or lid meant the size drink you paid for and place it on the cup securely. Push a straw into the opening on top of the lid.
   

Tips

• Use caution while activating the ice / soda machine. Too little pressure will not correctly activate the machine, while too much pressure will crush your cup, rendering it unusable. Varied pressure will usually cause spilling.
  
• The water lever is normally a little button located in the same place as one of the choices, usually underneath a non-carbonated beverage such as lemonade, iced tea, or fruit punch. Of course, if you're just getting water, most places will give you a small water cup for free.
  
• Put the ice in the glass first to prevent splashing.
  
• Don't drink soda directly from the fountain.
  
• If you don't like ice in your soda, skip it, since normally the soda is stored right underneath the ice dispenser.
  

Warnings

• Usually there are free refills, but ask before going back for seconds. Fast food restaurants are almost invariably free refill restaurants.
  
• Make sure the lid is on tightly, otherwise it might tip over and spill from the added weight and leverage of the straw.
  
• Hold the cup at the middle. If you hold the bottom, it can slip out of your hands. If you hold it at the top, your hand may accidentally crush the lid and cause the cup to fall to the ground, spilling everywhere.
  
• In many restaurants, there are clear plastic cups located next to the fountain for customers to drink water from. These cups are solely for water, and if you are caught with soda in them you will have to purchase a soda and/or leave the premises.
